Manteca trailed by 14 points after the first quarter of its season opener Friday in Folsom, but its physical ground game spearheaded by Bryson Davis took over en route to a 42-35 win over Vista del Lago.
Davis had a whopping 36 carries for 315 yards and four touchdowns. His 40-yard scamper with about 2 minutes to go put the reigning Sac-Joaquin Section Division II champion Buffaloes up for good.
The defense was able to hold the Eagles’ high-flying passing attack in the end.
Vista del Lago shot out to a 21-7 first-quarter lead, and standout quarterback John Koett hit Air Force commit Matt Long for four touchdowns in the opening half. Koett finished with five TD passes and 344 passing yards.
Manteca totaled 458 rushing yards and 485 total compared to Vista’s 450.
K.D. MacDannald added 65 yards on 15 attempts, and quarterback Garrison Reis scored twice on short-yardage runs.
Sophomore Quinn Martinez highlighted the defense with two interceptions, and defensive lineman Isaiah White contributed six tackles and half a sack.
Central Valley Christian 63, Ripon Christian 41
Ripon Christian’s offense got rolling after a slow start ultimately had no answer for three-star running back Bryson Donelson and kickoff returner Micah Paden.
Donelson rushed for 327 yards and five touchdowns on just seven carries, while Paden scored three times on 295 yards all on returns.
The Cavaliers led 22-6 after the first quarter, but RC went toe to toe with the Central Section power the rest of the way.
The Knights pounded their way to 348 rushing yards led by Grant Sonke (19 rushes, 115 yards), Trevor Van Elderen (14 rushes, 82 yards, TD) and wing back Brady Grondz (17-104-1). Preston Zuidervaart contributed with a touchdown run.
Sophomore Mason Tameling debuted at quarterback, completing six of 12 passes for 107 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. Jace Beidleman and Grondz were on the receiving end of the TD tosses.
Armijo 53, East Union 28
The Lancers had a tough opener in Fairfield.
Sophomore quarterback Kirk Simoni threw for three touchdowns and ran for one. J.P. Abrew, Jackson Fay and Carson Sanders were on the receiving end of those scoring tosses.
Simoni also completed a 2-point conversion pass to Robby Espinosa.
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Ripon Christian 3, Central Valley Christian 2
In a rematch of the Division IV state championship from last year, Ripon Christian pulled off a stunning 21-25, 15-25, 25-14, 27-25, 15-13 comeback victory Friday in Visalia.
Jordan Vander Veen led the way with 25 kills, 12 digs and five aces. Leah Van Wyngarden amassed nine aces to go with 12 kills and 35 digs.
Sydney Hofman added 11 kills and two blocks, Ally Brown chipped in 17 digs and setter Megan Weststeyn collected 49 assists.
The Knights’ JV and freshman teams both won in three sets.
