The Valley Oak League singles championship will go to a local sophomore.

Top-seeded Yok Chai Ma of Manteca was awarded a first-round bye Tuesday at Central Catholic and coasted to the title round. Sierra’s Brady Alves beat three opponents to get there. They’ll meet for a third time this season Thursday morning back at Central Catholic. The doubles tournament will take place simultaneously.

The unbeaten Ma won the VOL and Sac-Joaquin Section Division II doubles championships last year as a freshman. He took care of Central Catholic’s Matthews Dunn in the second round 8-0 and vanquished Oakdale’s Jaden Lebsack in the semifinals, 6-1, 6-0.

Alves opened with an 8-1 win over Camden Knight of Oakdale and blanked Manteca’s Michael Osanna, 8-0. In the semifinals, he held off Oakdale’s Parker Whitemyer, 6-0, 6-4,

 

GOLF

Tracy Tournament

Chad Flory shot 2-under 70 Monday to win the Tracy Tournament individual title at Tracy Country Club.

He led Ripon to a third-place finish on the team standings with a 412 score. Lodi (399) and Lincoln (410) were the top two.

Also scoring for Ripon were Jeremie Little with a 79, Vince Uecker with an 82, Richie Hughes with an 89 and Ty Herrin with a 92. Marcus Atienza had the throwaway score of 96.

The Indians also brought their ‘B’ team, which totaled a 531. Gabe Ortmann led them with a 100.

 

SOFTBALL

Ripon Christian 12, Gustine 4

Pitcher Shelby Terra held host Gustine (2-7 Southern Athletic League, 3-17 overall) scoreless for four innings on Tuesday before finishing with a complete-game five-hitter, striking out five. Offensively, she was 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs.

Tara Heida went 3 for 3 with two runs and three RBIs. Cilya Michel plated three runs and went 2 for 4. Kailee Alejandre also had two hits for the Knights (5-4, 7-9).

 

BASEBALL

Ripon Christian 28, Denair 2 (5)

The Knights (9-1, 15-5) amassed 15 runs in the fourth inning of this SAL shellacking.

They totaled 20 hits and were led by Grant Sonke’s 4-for-5 effort that included five runs and six RBIs. He completed a rare cycle with a solo home run in the fifth inning.

Josh Buffalow drove in four runs and plated three others, going 2 for 4. Logan Sauer went 3 for 5 with three runs and two RBIs, and Justin Severson was reached six times, going 3 for 3 with three runs, a double and an RBI. He was also hit by two pitches and walked once.

Eli Terpsma went added three runs, four RBIs and a triple, going 2 for 5.

Buffalow (1 2/3 innings, four strikeouts), Sauer (inning, win) and Terpsma (two innings, five strikeouts) split pitching duties.
