Lathrop’s boys soccer team had five different goal scorers, and Alan Hernandez assisted three of them in a 5-1 Western Athletic Conference win at Johansen on Tuesday.
It was a needed bounce-back result for the Spartans (2-1-1, 5-4-3 overall), who were coming off a 3-0 loss at Ceres and have tough match-ups ahead in Livingston and Central Valley.
Hernandez had a goal to go with the three assists. His set-piece tally sparked Lathrop after Johansen (0-4, 7-7) took an early lead. The Spartans were up 3-1 by halftime.
Andres Garcia contributed a goal and an assist. Angel Barajas and Juan Morales added one goal each. Josiah Reynaga capped the final score, finishing off a cross from Hernandez.
Lathrop hosts Livingston (3-0-1, 6-2-1) on Thursday.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
East Union 46, Central Catholic 28
In Modesto, the Lancers (2-1, 12-6 overall) broke away with a 16-7 surge in the third quarter and cruised to the Valley Oak League win. They led 18-15 in the first half but held Central Catholic (0-2, 5-9) to single digits in every quarter.
Julianna Gaspar drained three 3-pointers on her way to a team-high 15 points. She also grabbed six rebounds, two off the offensive glass for put-back layups.
Ava Barrera, Zyondupree Beasley and Haven Stone added six points apiece.
Central Catholic was paced by Mia Cardoza’s 12 points.
Sierra 52, Oakdale 41
Mya Everett amassed 25points, making three of five 3-pointers while contributing three steals and five blocks for the visiting Timberwolves (1-1 VOL, 6-7 overall).
The difference for Sierra was a 19-3 second quarter. Emalina Latu chimed in with nine points, Taylor Zalunardo tallied eight points, and Tessa Zalunardo had five points, seven assists and nine steals.
Ripon 40, Hughson 34
The Indians (1-0, 7-9 overall) mounted a 23-11 halftime lead and held on for the road victory in the Trans-Valley League opener.
Scarlett Ponce led Ripon’s balanced attack with nine points. Nine different Indians scored. Morgan Bleakley scored 11 points for Hughson (0-1, 1-12).
JV girls basketball
Lathrop 29, Pacheco 26
Zoha Ali accumulated 16 points in the Spartans’ WAC-opening win Monday in Los Banos.
Lathrop (1-0, 6-4 overall) went to its press defense in the second half to take the lead.
East Union 38, Central Catholic 14
Kymoni Beasley fired a game-high 16 points, and Savannah Lopez pitched in nine points to the Lancers’ victory.
