RIVERBANK – The Ripon Indians would have liked to nab a few more Trans Valley League titles, and they would have liked a few higher placings, but the club is definitely pleased with its performance in the TVL Championships Saturday at Riverbank High.

The Indians advanced all 12 of the wrestlers they sent to the mat, getting 11 top-4 place finishers and another alternate.

“I’m happy that they’re all advancing,” Ripon head coach Glen White said. “We ended up not taking two of our varsity kids who I think would have done really well for different circumstances; we really would have liked to have those two.

“Overall, I thought we wrestled OK. I was kind of hoping that some of our kids would finish a little higher than they did, but I am glad they’re all advancing.”

Ripon standout Trevor Smith cemented his legacy in the TVL with a first-round pin in his 195-pound championship win. Smith was also named the TVL’s Outstanding Upper weight wrestler in the post tournament ceremonies. Escalon finished with the tournament’s most success, followed by a strong showing from the Hughson Huskies.

Ripon’s next stop will be the Sac-Joaquin Section Division-V Wrestling Championships to be held at Lindhurst High pver two hours north of Ripon. The tournament will be held Feb. 15 and 16, beginning at 11 a.m.

“As far as I know we have a later weigh-in,” White said. “So we’ll probably leave the morning of like 6-6:30 just to make sure that if we hit traffic we should be able to still get there on time.”
