Ripon rolled in prestigious MC tourney

SALIDA — Ripon High’s boys basketball team drew first blood Monday in its first game of the Modesto Christian Holiday Hoops Classic, of the premier tournaments in Northern California, against Burbank of Southern California.

Unfortunately, the Bulldogs didn’t let Ripon get much else going for the remainder of the contest and dealt the Indians a 63-50 loss.

“We’ve got a young team this year with three sophomores and a couple of juniors,” Ripon head coach Rod Wright said. “We have to kind of keep that in perspective, but we’re getting a little bit closer to where we need to be every day. We played hard the whole entire game today and never rolled over, and that’s something that’s good to see in a young team like this.”

Burbank (6-4) held Ripon scoreless for almost an entire quarter prior to halftime, and led 34-17 heading into the break. Ripon (3-6) did manage to cut the Bulldog lead down to 10 points in the third quarter, but Burbank would eventually pull away again.

Ripon did, however managed to get to the foul line 12 times in the game, but made only 12 of its 21 shots. Burbank only missed four of their 14 attempts in the contest.

Jared Ratto led Ripon in scoring with 12 points, and also recorded two rebounds and a pair of steals. Cole Herrin and Conner Jones both finished the night with seven points.

It was the Burbank duo of Andrew Spight and Austin Pope — who finished with 13 and 12 points, respectively — that gave the Indians trouble. The Bulldogs relied on a full-court press for the majority of the contest to try and force turnovers, and used their speed and agility to capitalize on Ripon’s mistakes.

“Coming in to this tournament and trying to get some experience is something that we’ve done for the last seven years,” said Wright, whose team will face host team Modesto Christian twice during the TVL season. “Hopefully we learn from this and come back a stronger team tomorrow.”

Ripon will take the court today at 1 p.m. against the loser of the Turlock-Morningside matchup.

Bear Creek Tournament
Pleasant Grove 84, East Union 58
Despite having the lead after the first quarter, the Lancers couldn’t hold on against Pleasant Grove of Elk Grove in the opening round of the 5th annual Bruins Shootout.

Jordan Kron finished the game with 24 points, while Robert Vaughn and TeeJay Gordon both finished with 12.

“It was there for us tonight, but they hit some shots and we didn’t,” East Union head coach Brett Lewis said. “They were just the better team.”
The Lancers take the court today at 3 p.m. when they take on Freedom High School at Bear Creek High.

Frustrated by its sloppy all-around effort just two days prior, East Union was near-perfect Wednesday when rival Sierra visited for Game 2 of their best-of-three Valley Oak League series. Blake Mount struck out 12 in a dominant two-hit shutout, and he was backed by a clean defensive effort and timely hitting in a 9-0 win for EU at Maurice Agostini Field. It was a complete role reversal from the opener, which Sierra took 11-1 in six innings. The rubber game is Friday at Sierra’s Jack Stadium.
