With 28 seconds remaining in the fourth period Friday night, Ripon Christian’s Reagan Van der Hoek worked her way open on an inbounds pass from Maddie Yonker and banked in a shot to put the Knights ahead by a point.

They would hold that lead, as host Ripon got off one final shot as time expired, giving Ripon Christian the thrilling 28-27 come-from-behind win in Trans-Valley League girls basketball action.

“I worked my way open or that last bucket,” Van der Hoek said. “I found an open area and I was in the right spot at the right time.”

Van der Hoek finished with eight points, seven rebounds, an assist and a steal.

Yonker (12 points, 12 rebounds, two assists, two steals) gave the Knights (3-3 TVL, 11-8 overall) their first lead of the night at 24-21 on a 3-pointer with 6:05 remaining in the game.

“I needed that 3-pointer,” Yonker said. “That’s for sure.

“I’ve been in a rut and I knew I had to keep shooting through it. I needed to get one in this game and that one was essential to get us the lead so we could finish the game out.”

Ripon Christian fell behind 11-2 in the first quarter and trailed 19-13 at halftime before holding the Indians (1-5, 7-3) to two points in the third quarter to knot the score at 21-21 after three periods.

“The girls really gutted it out,” Ripon Christian coach Mike Vander Molen said. “To fall behind like they did on the road and then to chip away, chip away, that says a lot about them. “Unfortunately, we have done that four games in a row now. We won three of them, but lost to Riverbank on Thursday.

“Playing against (Ripon coach) Rick (Inderbitzin) is always tough. He is always switching defenses and he is doing a great job with his freshmen guards.”

Vanessah Ponce (nine points) gave Ripon the lead back 27-26 with 2:10 left in the contest on a

field goal.

“This is a rival game and it was exciting,” Indians coach Rick Inderbitzin said. “When you only score 27 points that makes it tough, but it was a good battle.

“They played well, and I thought at times we played pretty well too. Give them the credit they finished it off at the end.”

Tuesday at 7 p.m. the Knights travel to Hughson and Ripon goes to Livingston.
