Three league champions fell in the second round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Coed Team Tennis Playoffs on Tuesday.

Ripon was not among them.

The Trans-Valley League champion Indians smashed visiting West Campus of Sacramento 9-0 and will play host to Sonora next Monday. Sonora, the No. 2 team out of the Mother Lode League, knocked off Southern League title holder Ripon Christian, 5-4. Additional information from that match was unavailable as of press time.

“We beat them (Sonora) 6-3 earlier in the year, but that was in early March and they gave RC a good match today,” Ripon coach Robert Mayfield said. “So we’ll need to be focused if we expect to win.”

West Campus, which placed third in the Golden Empire League, edged Highlands 5-4 in the first round Monday but was shorthanded against Ripon with four starters staying in school to take tests. That led to some lopsided results in favor of the Indians.

Diego Macias gave Ripon’s Bryce Coutrakis some trouble in the No. 1 boys single match, however. Coutrakis prevailed 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 but needed to win the final six games in succession to come away victorious.

Savannah Bickle, Ripon’s top girl, played through shoulder discomfort to sweep Wendy Hy, 6-2, 6-1. TVL runner-up Nik Lengert (6-4, 6-0) and Shannon Wesley (6-0, 6-1) also won in singles action.

Ripon made quick work of its opponents in doubles play. Sweeping their matches were Isaiah Sanchez/Ian Flanders (6-1, 6-0), Federico Entrade/Fidel Perez (6-1, 6-1), Hailey Johnson/Maddison Flanders (6-1, 6-3), Alli Hickman/Emily O’Brien (6-1, 6-4) and Diego Franco-Carreno/Mandy Wesley (6-0, 6-1).

Not all Ripon players will have the rest of the week off, as three will compete in the SJS Individual Tournament Thursday and Friday at Oak Park in Stockton. Lengert enters in the boys singles competition, while TVL champs Shannon Wesley and Flanders join the girls doubles field.

Division III boys

Manteca 8, Patterson 1

Valley Oak League champion Manteca took care of business in its first-round match on Tuesday.

Yok Jing Ma (6-1, 6-2), Michael Lopez (6-1, 6-0), Gino Mercado (6-2, 6-1), Nolan Osborn (6-2, 6-0) and Kyle Thornburg (6-0, 6-2) dominated in straight-set victories. Ma and Lopez are competing in the SJS Division II Individual Tournament Thursday and Friday at Roseville’s Johnson Ranch Racquet Club.

Yok Eyh Mah and Si-Hao Tang won at No. 1 doubles 6-0, 6-2. Edvin Pepic and Dhillon Patel held off Steven Halseth and Harsimran Baines 6-3, 6-4. Manteca’s No. 3 tandem of Yayha Shabbar and Matt Pabla led 6-4, 2-1 before their opponents retired.

Manteca hosts either Tri-County Conference champion River City or Western Athletic Conference runner-up Central Valley next Monday.

“This was the first step in achieving what we want to achieve and what they have worked so hard for in the past year,” Manteca coach Frank Fontana said.
