In a game that included 22 miscues — either errors, passed balls, wild pitches or hit batters — it was only fitting that Lathrop would escape with a 10-9 non-league baseball game win over visiting Delta Charter on a walk-off passed ball on Thursday.
Lathrop (6-15) entered the bottom of the seventh trailing, 9-8. Carson Scott led off the frame for the Spartans and reached when he was hit by a pitch. Josue Nerio hit a grounder to second, forcing out Scott but leaving Nerio at first. Nazir Jones got aboard on the first of back-to-back Dragons errors with Andrew Chunn loading the bases on the second Delta Charter error.
Spartans freshman Vaughn Sanchez plated Nerio with a bounding grounder in front of home plate, tying the game and leaving the bases loaded. Jones ended the game when he scored on a passed ball.
“I was a little nervous in the beginning of the season,” Sanchez said. “But as the season went on, I have been able to get more calm.
“On that last at-bat, I saw his curveball that was painted outside, and I knew that if I saw that again, I was going to poke it in play. I did, and it worked.”
Two Lathrop errors helped bring Evan Hollis (home run, five RBI) to the plate in the fifth inning for the Dragons (7-5) of Tracy with the bases loaded and two out. Hollis blasted a 3-2 offering over the left-field fence, spotting Delta Charter to a 9-8 lead.
“It was a hard-fought game,” Spartans coach Jon Estante said. “We made a couple of mistakes to let that sixth inning get away from us. Their No. 7 (Hollis) was a hard thrower – we struggled a little bit against him – and he had a great hit that gave them the lead, but our kids kept battling, stayed focused, reset themselves and came back to get the walk-off win.”
Rueben Lopez pitched the final five innings for Lathrop and due in part to defensive prowess he posted three 1-2-3 innings, striking out nine and allowing four hits with no walks and one earned run.
“It was great,” Lopez said. I trusted my defense and I knew what I wanted to throw.
“I owe everything to the defense. I normally start, but coming in after Jordan (Blasé) was great. I felt warm when I came in.”
Blasé reached base four times for the Spartans on an error, being hit by a pitch, a single and a dropped third strike.
“I just stayed composed,” Blasé said. “My first few at bats I was looking early but felt a little uncomfortable with the pitching, but eventually I got a hit.
“On that dropped third strike he overthrew first and I got second.”
Lathrop begins the final week of Western Athletic conference play on Tuesday, hosting Pacheco at 4 p.m.
