MODESTO – The Sierra High varsity girls cross country team led the pack at Wednesday’s Valley Oak League meet at Legion Park.
Francis Scherry (21 minutes: 41 seconds) paced the Timberwolves, taking second in the 3.1-mile course while battling the sweltering hot conditions. She was unable to catch Sonora’s Samantha Smith (21:28).
“I think we’re establishing ourselves as the team to beat (in the VOL),” said Sierra coach Mike Rosendin.
Team scores were unavailable, with Sierra beating out East Union for the top spot, and Oakdale and Sonora placing third and fourth, respectively.
The Lancers were led by Alejandra Alvarez (22:36), who took fifth in the field of 39 runners.
Sierra’s Kelly Paredes (22:43), Katelyn Carbiener (22:45), and Patricia Angel (22:58) were right behind while finishing in the top 10.
“Kelly and Patricia are newcomers to the sport but they’re fitting in rather nicely,” Rosendin added.
His varsity boys took second place behind Sonora.
Manteca High was third, edging out Oakdale.
Weston Ranch and East Union took fourth and fifth, respectively.
Nick Klein (17:10) and Clancy McConnell (17:27) led the winners, going one and two in the field of 50 runners.
Sierra’s Ricky Morris (17:28) was third, with Manteca’s Tim Baker (18:21) taking sixth.
The Timberwolves’ Kyle Furtado (18:47) and Miguel Velazquez (18:48) were a respective seventh and eighth.
The VOL teams will meet again in two weeks at Oakdale’s Woodward Reservoir.
Juan Williams (20:23) led the way for the Timberwolves, taking first overall among 32 competitors.
Jake Duncan (21:04), Ryan Tyler (22:04), Mike Merriles (22:50) and Dakota Burgdorf (23:05) were among the top 10 placers for Sierra.
The group was led respectively by Josh Spooner (12:07) and Jacob Supinger (12:09).
Brendon Cutright (12:13) of Weston Ranch was third.
Rounding out the top finishers was Sierra’s Jeremy Coronado (12:27), Aaron Mackey (12:48), Gerald Parente (13:08) and Jacob Macedo (13:13); and Lathrop’s Benneth Bautista (13:09), who finished ahead of Macedo.
In the girls division, Gabriella Vazquez (15:53) of Manteca took first place, beating out Jazelle Prado (18:23) and Courtney Fritchen (18:52), both of Weston Ranch.
