STOCKTON — No surprise that East Union High golfer Tyler Griggs is the Most Valuable Player in the Valley Oak League.

The UCLA commit shared the honor with Ryan Meyer, who led Oakdale to a first-place finish in Monday’s VOL Championship Tournament held at Brookside Golf & Country Club.

Griggs found the familiar 18-hole course to his liking, earning earned medalist honor at the league event hosted by Weston Ranch while firing a six-under-par 66. The junior finished two strokes better than Meyer (68) and is league MVP for a third straight year.

As a team, the Mustangs had the best overall score at 385. The Lancers (461) and Central Catholic (472) placed second and third, respectively.

The top three teams and the six individual qualifiers (players not on those three teams) will play in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III tournament this upcoming Monday at the Ridge Golf & Event Center in Auburn.

Tristan Gonzalez was one of four players from Sierra High to advance to next week’s event.

“I just started playing golf for the first time last summer,” he said, crediting friend and teammate Michael Erdman for getting him hooked.

Playing Brookside for the first time, Gonzalez found the course challenging.

“I started on the back nine and found that to be difficult. But on front nine, I got going with a couple of pars,” he said.

Gonzalez (102) and Erdman (104) fellow Sierra teammates Damian Simon (99) and Derrick Kuwada (106) along with join G.K. Dhillon (90) and Cole Glass (106) of Kimball as individual qualifiers.
