Mathematically, the Ripon High boys varsity soccer squad remains in the playoff hunt.
But in order to keep those hopes alive, the Indians must win out on their remaining Trans Valley League games and get help from other teams.
Ripon (2-4-3. 6-10) was reeling from the 1-0 loss at Hughson on Tuesday.
“We had opportunities but we squandered them,” said Indian coach Jaime De Bruyn.
The second-place Huskies (5-3-1) took advantage of a slip by Ripon, scoring in the 30th minute of the first half.
“Their guy got behind on our defense and capitalized,” De Bruyn said.
Ripon had several scoring opportunities, including three in the first half. “We had one in which we were one-on-one with the goalie but couldn’t connect,” said De Bruyn.
Lost in the shuffle was a strong effort by the defense led by goalie Tim Combley, who had seven saves.
Ripon will have a chance to rebound on Thursday against winless Modesto Christian.
From there, the Indians will close out the regular season next week, facing Riverbank and Orestimba.
