LODI — It took Ripon less than 90 seconds to find the net Wednesday night, and the Indians never looked back in a 3-0 win over Amador of Sutter Creek for their second consecutive Sac-Joaquin Section Division V girls soccer championship at Tokay High.
“This feels wonderful,” Indians coach Nicole Meyer said. “These girls worked so hard this year. Last year we took second in the TVL and this year our goal was to take first and they did, going undefeated. They made it back to the section (final) and they played like the undefeated team they were.
“We focused on winning the first half and the second half it was about keeping that lead. They didn’t doubt themselves for a second tonight.”
Aubree Pelon got that first goal for Ripon (18-3-1) in the second minute when she fielded a loose ball from Maddy Winter and shot across her body to make the score 1-0.
“I read that ball really well and timed it perfectly,” Pelon said. “I was able to hook my left across my body. That helped wake us up and get our energy really high really fast.”
Near the midpoint of the first half, Ariana Scholten made the score 2-0 with an unassisted blast from 28 yards out. In the 54th minute Scholten took a through ball from Hailey Pugh and arced a rainbow over the Buffaloes goalie for the final goal of the match.
“We definitely came out with more will to play and I think our spirit was a little bit higher than theirs,” Scholten said. “Winning back to back feels amazing. I am so excited.”
Indians goalie Ashley Pugh notched six saves but she owes her clean sheet to teammate Kailey Tijero.
Pugh came out of the net to ward off an attack by Amador (15-5) in the 58th minute and the ball got off to her side and in front of the net.
As a Buffaloes player attempted to capitalize on the free ball, Tijero came in and blasted the ball out of the box.
“Their girl was coming in and I knew I needed to get the ball out,” Tijero said. “The girl had the ball in front of the net and I kicked it out.”
Ripon controlled the tempo of the game from start to finish and outshot Amador 21-10 with 15 of those 21 on frame.
The season continues on Tuesday for these two teams in the CIF NorCal Championships with pairings to be announced Sunday night. Ripon was the runner-up in Division IV last year.
