East Union’s girls basketball team began its Valley Oak League co-champion defense on Thursday, winning decisively at Oakdale, 56-26.

Although it’s the Lancers’ 12th-straight win over the Mustangs (0-1 VOL, 7-9 overall), coach Jim Agostini made sure his team did not overlook its opponent — especially with five of its first six league games on the road.

“We had a good practice and talked about it,” Agostini said. “This is one of just 12 league games, so we have to be ready, especially when we go here on the road. The girls came out prepared tonight, leading from start to finish.”

East Union (1-0, 11-5) led 13-4 after the first quarter and held Oakdale to single digits in every period. Haven Stone paced the Lancers with 18 points. Ava Barrera registered 11 points and eight rebounds. Shebra Rezaye added 10 points, while Zyondupree Beasley had four points and five boards.

Oakdale was headed by 6-foot-4 center Samantha Powell and 5-11 wing Cassidy Terry, who scored seven points apiece.

“We got a lot of contributions, and everybody got to play,” Agostini said, noting that the team totaled 10 assists. “It was a great, team win.”

The Lancers head to Mountain House (1-0, 12-4) on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
