TRACY — Shorthanded and coming off one of its longest breaks between games, East Union showed no signs of rust Wednesday when it opened the 40th Tracy Breakfast Lions/Tom Hawkins Tournament at Tracy High’s Swenson Gym.

Nylah Dyson tallied 22 points and six steals in just three quarters of action, while Ava Barrera added 16 points and seven rebounds in the Lancers’ 60-24 pasting of West. East Union (11-3) continues pool play today against Enochs starting 1:30 p.m.

“They came out ready to play,” East Union coach Jim Agostini said. “They were focused on the defensive end, which we liked. Just kind of played the game.”

The Lancers are missing two key players for the tournament but are soon adding two transfers who become eligible to play this Saturday.

East Union still had its way against a young West (5-8) squad that was forced into 30 turnovers. Dyson got it going early with perimeter shooting and fastbreak points, powering a 14-0 run that gave the Lancers separation in the opening quarter.

Barrera knocked down two 3s in the second period when EU scored 11 unanswered points to stretch its lead to 31-9. The Wolf Pack — led by Athena Pastran’s nine points, six rebounds and five steals — was held to just two points in the quarter and trailed 41-11 at halftime.

Junior center Alessandra Montes contributed eight points, six rebounds and three blocks for the Lancers. Mariela Navarro chipped in five points, four rebounds and seven steals. Freshman point guard Julianna Gaspar had five assists and five steals to go with two points.

Tatianna Lowery led Lathrop with 17 points and six steals, and Shakara Porter had 11 points 11 rebounds and seven steals. They combined to score all of the Spartans’ points in the third quarter, as Lowery buried two 3s that were followed by an acrobatic runner, transition layup and mid-lane jumper from Porter.
