FLAG FOOTBALL: Sierra, East Union bow out in quarterfinals

 There won’t be an all-Valley Oak League showdown in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III semifinals after intracity rivals Sierra and East Union were eliminated in the second round Thursday.

Sixth-seeded Rio Linda upset VOL champion Sierra at Daniel Teicheira Memorial Stadium, 33-28.

The No. 3 Timberwolves (19-6) were in control at the outset, scoring the first 16 points and leading 22-6, at time point. Rio Linda (16-6) responded with 27 unanswered points.

Taylor Zalunardo amassed 13 flag pulls while contributing 29 yards of offense in her final game for Sierra. Fellow senior captain Alison Cozby had three receptions for 18 yards and a touchdown.

Quarterback/safety Maitland Kohoutek finished 14-of-23 passing for 181 yards and three touchdowns. She also rushed for 27 yards and had an interception on defense.

Janessa Barnes racked up 136 yards and two touchdowns on eight receptions. Zoe Suttion added five receptions, 46 yards and a TD. Freshman QB Tessa Zalunardo completed eight of 13 passes for 81 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

The Knights travel to Del Campo for the semifinals next Wednesday, Nov. 6.

Dual-threat QB Sophia Wright and No. 2-seeded Del Campo (15-3) were too much for the seventh-seeded Lancers (18-5).

Julianna Gaspar connected with senior Kaylee Mejia for a 40-yard touchdown and East Union’s only points of the game.
