Ripon Christian was able to overcome a poor start but couldn’t fly with the Falcons of Forest Lake Christian for the duration in a Sac-Joaquin Section Division V boys basketball quarterfinal Friday in Auburn.

Chase Augustino fired 14 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter to help fourth-seeded Forest Lake win 73-58 while clinching a spot in next Wednesday’s semifinal at Galt High. It also means No. 5 Ripon Christian (22-6) is not returning to the Final Four after doing so in each of the previous four seasons.

“They played really well down the stretch,” Ripon Christian coach Ron Vander Molen said. “They got hot and we kind of went cold.”

Forest Lake Christian (25-3) outscored the Knights 26-12 in the fourth quarter after leading 47-46 after three.

Ripon Christian was ice cold to start, as the Falcons soared out the gates with a 19-2 run. The Knights did well to come back and even led 37-35 with 4:45 remaining in the third.

Sophomore Travis Vander Molen paced RC with 17 points, 13 rebounds and four assists. Brothers Sean and Eric Broker added 15 and 13 points, respectively.

Forest Lake’s Luke Jordan led all scorers with 19 points. Six-foot-5 Christian Dethlefs contributed 17.

The Falcons take on top-seeded Capital Christian at 7:30 next Wednesday.
