ESCALON — East Union’s Nico Salcido took home first place Saturday in the 136-pound A bracket of the Lloyd C. Engel Wrestling Tournament at Escalon High School.
“Last year, I got first place in the D bracket,” Salcido said. “It meant a lot to come back and get first place in the A bracket, for sure.”
The tournament is a two-day affair with Friday’s results dictating Saturday’s brackets with most undefeated wrestlers on Friday going in the A bracket, one-loss wrestlers in the B brackets, and so on. Salcido went 6-0 over two days with two pins and four major decisions.
Manteca’s Josiah Sagapolu was the 194-C champion, winning all four of his Saturday matches by pin.
“I knew and (Coach Vince) Bordi knew I had to go one match at a time,” Sagapolu said. “I feel good coming off a first-place finish going into league.
“Today will help me get back to Masters and hopefully place there.”
Manteca’s Ryder Vasquez was first in the heavyweight C division.
“Both of my wins in the finals were by pin and both in the third round,” Vasquez said. “I feel good to bounce back and get a first place.
“The last tournament I didn’t do so well, but getting first here feels pretty good.”
Shaan Jagpal of Sierra brought home the gold medal at 154 D, but he was disappointed with his performance on Friday.
“I went 0-2 on the first day,” Jagpal said. “So, I couldn’t get into a higher bracket and that is kind of disappointing.
“I came back but, I feel like I could still do more.”
East Union’s Julian Perez was first at 146 C and teammate Izik Quezada was second at 159 C.
Manteca A-bracket placers were Erick Cortez (second, 179), Misael Meza (third, 154) and Luis Rosas (fourth, 142). Alijah Marshall (130) was second in the C bracket.
