Ronnie Green did not have to do much convincing when he put Giovanni Perez up for MVP of the Valley Oak League for a third straight year.

“He set himself up with stats and abilities alone,” the East Union coach said. “To be honest, it was an overwhelming decision at the all-league meeting. I’m happy for him to win that again.”

The senior wing forward is leaving his mark at EU as a three-time All-VOL MVP and the program’s all-time leading scorer. He was the league’s top scorer with 14 goals and five assists in 10 matches for the runner-up Lancers (7-2-1, 16-10-2), recording two hat tricks and three braces along the way.

Perez produced 31 goals and five assists overall, wrapping up his stellar career with 107 goals.

“Gio is just a generational player,” Green said. “He has that knack to be in the right place at the right time. He just knows how to finish goals. He had a strong season again this year and it kept us in contention. He is going to be sorely missed going forward.”

Perez is one of seven Lancers to get voted onto the all-league first and second teams. Co-runner-up Sierra (7-2-1, 11-7-3) has six all-league selections, while resurgent Manteca (4-6, 10-17-1) has five after ending a decade-long postseason drought.

Bryce Lassiter of Kimball (7-1-2, 12-3-2) is Coach of the Year. The Jaguars edged East Union 1-0 in the final regular-season game to repeat as champions.

Goalie Andres Garcia (four shutouts, two PK saves) is back on the All-VOL first team after doing so as a sophomore for senior-heavy East Union. Joining him are center forward Alexis Berber (six goals, 10 assists), midfielder Ethan Mamorno (two goals, assist), holding mid Luis Mata (two assists) and defender Adrian Vivanco. Winger Angel Guzman (three goals, three assists) made the second team.
