OAKDALE — Seventh-seeded East Union was the beneficiary of four first-inning walks but could only muster one run out of those gifts and turned around and committed four costly errors to allow No. 2 Oakdale to come from behind for an 8-5 Division IV second-round Sac-Joaquin Section playoff win.

“The errors killed us,” Lancers coach Dan Bauer said. “You can’t give a good team like that errors, and there were some other plays we should have made.

“But I am proud of the way the guys fought back. We didn’t give up, we kept grinding and grinding. I am proud of the seniors and their contribution to the program. East Union baseball has to keep getting better. We get better every year, that’s the goal and I think we will.”

The Lancers (15-15) carried a 5-3 lead into the bottom of the fifth when another error coupled with a two-run home run by Georgia commit Landon Schutte (2 for 4, home run, three RBI, two runs) helped the Mustangs (21-9) put up five runs in the frame which proved to be the margin of victory.

When asked about his team’s rocky start, Oakdale coach Joey Machado said, “That’s playoff baseball. We talk about playing a complete seven, one inning at a time. We had some adversity early, and I am super proud with how we responded.”

After a bases-loaded walk in the first to Brayden Camara (RBI, run) scored Peyton Heath for a 1-0 lead, East Union scored two more in the third to retake the lead at 3-2. Joe Alvarez led off the third for the Lancers with a walk, took second on Camara’s single and third on Kirk Simoni’s sacrifice bunt to give East Union runners on second and third with one out. Alvarez scooted home on a wild pitch and Camara scored on Ryan Allen’s sacrifice fly.

Blake Mount doubled in Jackson Fay in the fourth and Randy Martinez put the Lancers ahead 5-3 in the fifth when he scored on a sacrifice bunt by Shane Lewis (double, RBI).

The Mustangs begin a best-of-three semifinal series Monday hosting No. 3 Roseville at 4 p.m.
