East Union held visiting Sonora to fewer points than turnovers until the game’s final seconds Monday in a 63-29 non-league girls basketball shellacking at Dalben Center.

Sonora (0-3) led briefly at 4-2 before the Lancers (3-1) went on an 11-0 run to end the first period and then started the second quarter on a 9-3 spurt. East Union’s Zyondupree Beasley scored seven of her game-high 13 points in the second period.

“We had kind of a slow start just coming back from break,” Beasley said. “We had to lock back in.

“We had to go from break mode to basketball mode, and when we did it just took off from there.”

Scoreless in the first two quarters, Shebra Rezaye (seven rebounds) scored all 10 of her points for the Lancers in the second half.

“We started of slow, but we got the momentum going,” Rezaye said. “With everyone’s energy we can withstand the challenge.

“We really work on defense. Going into the game, our mindset is defense.”

East Union’s Haven Stone and Alexa Zuniga scored 10 points apiece to form the quartet of Lancers in double figures with Beasley and Rezaye. The East Union defense held the Wildcats to single digits in each of the first three periods and forced 25 turnovers in that same time span. Sonora only turned the ball over three times in the fourth quarter and Ella Kaiser’s 3-pointer in the closing seconds gave the Wildcats one more point than their turnover total.

“We’re working hard on our defense,” Lancers coach Jim Agostini said. “We have a young team, a new team, and we are learning how to work together. This team is working hard.

“We’re getting balanced scoring coming from different people. That’s a little bit unusual for us compared to at least the last eight years. We are sharing the ball, and our assist totals are up. We had four girls in double figures, and you have to like that.”

Kylie Serva led Sonora with eight points followed by Kaiser and Taylor Fought with seven points apiece.
