MODESTO — Leading by a point at the end of the first period, Clovis West exploded for a 20-point second period and never looked back in a 69-54 win over Manteca to open the Modesto Christian Holiday Hoop Classic.

The Golden Eagles (4-9) applied a relentless trapping press from the opening tip to the final buzzer, forcing the Buffaloes (5-7) to turn the ball over 20 times.

“That’s a team that presses and is a really good squad,” Manteca coach Geoff Israel said. “We just kind of stop. We get past their press and we stop – again – jump stop, finish, didn’t do it. But it’s better than we expected.

“That team plays all the top competition in the state. We all said that if we can keep it within 20 it’s kind of a victory for us. That is probably the best squad we have faced all year, and we were with there with them in the beginning.”

Johan Peringelil paced the Buffaloes with a double-double at 15 points and 10 rebounds with three steals, two blocks and an assist. Tyler Watkins added 12 points, and Vincent Cardoza 10.

Clovis West’s Jace Kellog was lights out, torching the Buffaloes for 33 points. Teammate D.J. Stickman added 11 points.

“In the first half, I thought we gave up too much initial penetration,” Golden Eagles coach Derrick Baquera said. “We didn’t do a good enough job of trying to take them out of their comfort zone.

“We did OK in the second half, but we have a lot to clean up.”

Clovis West will get its opportunity to clean up at 4:30 this afternoon in a quarterfinal contest against Bullard of Fresno. Manteca faces Amador Valley of Pleasanton in a consolation tilt today at 10:30 a.m.
