Behind a two-error second inning for host Manteca, the pitching prowess of Central Catholic’s Braelyn Avila and the big bat of her battery mate Madie Harrison, the Valley Oak League champion Raiders rolled to an 8-0 win on Tuesday in VOL softball action.
“That one bad inning with the errors, including the two-out error which led to a home run, really hurt us,” Buffaloes coach Josh Farris said. “Their one big inning was those couple of errors, a walk, an infield single – that team is way too good to give them extra chances. Their lineup is way too tough.”
Central Catholic (11-0 VOL, 19-4 overall) put up six runs in that fateful second inning, including a three-run two-out home run by Harrison.
Following Harrison’s towering shot, Manteca pitcher Isabel Tonna retired the next 12 batters she faced and 13 of the next 14 before with no hits in that stretch before leaving the game after the sixth.
“I though Bel (Tonna) pitched really, really well for her defense not playing well, and we have to hit the ball,” Farris said. “She did a good job of being her and not letting the defense behind her get to her. There is a reason they are the top-ranked team in this area. All we can do is get back to the drawing board and reset our expectations and collect some wins Thursday and Friday at the Nor-Cal Tournament.”
Sienna Owen got the lone Buffaloes hit when she snuck a grounder between third and shortstop in the third inning. She took second on a sacrifice bunt by Sienna Owen and stole third but was stranded there at inning’s end.
Harrison (2 for 3, five RBI, two home runs) added a two-run home run in the seventh.
“She (Harrison) has had the big bat for us this year,” Raiders coach Sam Nichols said. “She is having a great year.”
Besides Owen, the Buffaloes managed just two more base runners, both on errors. Avila struck out three.
“She (Avila) is a freshman,” Nichols said. “She works hard and she grinds.”
Manteca starts the Nor-Cal Classic Tournament Thursday morning at 8 at the Tracy Softball Complex.
