Buffs shore up defense in win over Lathrop

Manteca High’s softball team hopes last week’s discouraging loss to Kimball is fully behind it after beating visiting Lathrop 8-0 Monday.

Last Thursday, the Buffaloes dropped a 13-0, five-inning decision to Kimball, which took advantage of nine errors.

“We took care of that and played well behind (pitcher Peyton Rose) today,” Manteca coach Corey Navarro said. “We did have two errors, but they were good-effort plays. Other than that our defense was pretty solid, I just wanted a little more with the bats.”

The Buffaloes (2-1 Valley Oak League, 8-5 overall) left eight runners on base including two each in the first two innings.

Mariah Navarro sparked Manteca with a two-run double in the fourth and was followed by Brooke Mejorado’s own two-run double.

Mejorado was terrific at the plate, going 3 for 4 with four RBIs while finishing a triple shy of the cycle. Her homer in the sixth was of the inside-the-park variety.

Ashley Gase added a 3-for-4 effort, and Sierra Garcia contributed a pinch-hit RBI single.

Rose’s complete-game five-hitter included eight strikeouts to no walks. Briana Lopez was 2 for 3 to lead Lathrop (0-5, 2-9).

The two teams will meet again today at Lathrop High.
