Manteca’s Riley Ward went on a 12-point service run behind four aces at the beginning of the first set Monday night, setting the tone for a 25-14, 25-17, 25-12 sweep of host East Union in Valley Oak League girls volleyball action at Dalben Center.

Ward finished with 26 assists, 13 service points, six aces and three kills.

“I felt on,” Ward said. “The past couple of games I have been off on serving, and tonight I really tried to focus.

“It really worked tonight.”

Ariceli McBroom was a force at the net for the Buffaloes (6-5 VOL, 13-11 overall) with 14 kills, eight service points, six digs and a block.

“It was definitely a good win,” McBroom said. “Our team played really well together, and we are playing really good as a team overall.”

Manteca’s Nicole Ayala patrolled the back row with 16 digs, eight service points, five assists and two aces.

“I feel tonight was a match of trying to have the most energy,” Ayala said. “We used our energy to pick ourselves up and keep balls from dropping on defense.”

Trinity Dodd posted six kills, three blocks and two digs for the Buffaloes, while Kamiyah Johnson tallied five digs, seven service points, a kill and an assist.

“When the girls play confident, this is how they look,” Manteca coach Robin Chandler said. “They just need to do that in every game, whether we got down by a few points or make a few mistakes.

“We are really working on our mindset, and this game really showed it. They didn’t get down on themselves when they made mistakes, and I am really proud of them.”

This was the sixth loss in the last seven outings for the Lancers (4-7, 5-11).

“I am very frustrated, because we have so much talent and we don’t bring it all to the board at the same time,” East Union coach Tevani Liotard said. “Not taking anything away from Manteca, they played well, they mixed it up, they had their offense tipping and off-speeding, which made our feet slow.”

Katelynn Trevino tallied six kills for the Lancers. Giselle Velazquez added five digs, nine service points and an ace with Jaelynn Ballou (five service points, two kills, ace), Meritiana Luani (four assists), Marcella Carranza (three assists) and Jedah Haywood (two kills) rounding out the East Union attack.

The VOL campaign wraps up Tuesday night with the Lancers traveling to Sierra and the Buffaloes traveling to Oakdale. Both matches start at 6:15.
