Manteca senior Emma Ngo came up short of a third consecutive Valley Oak League title, as she and Shreya Raman placed second in the doubles tournament Wednesday at Manteca Regional Tennis Center.
The top-seeded Buffaloes lost to No. 2 Anya Palsson and Vivian Zhang of league champion Mountain House, 3-6, 2-6.
Ngo and Raman swept past their first three opponents: Patterson’s Isabella Clouzel and Violet Tongson, East Union’s Jalyssa Molina and Carerra Mendez, and, in the semifinals, Central Catholic’s Mianna Robinson and Landyn Wetzel, 6-2, 6-1.
Ngo outlasted Robinson in a three set marathon for the singles championship last year. As a sophomore, Ngo was part of the league champion doubles tandem that took third in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II Individual Tournament.
Only two other duos from area schools made it as far as the quarterfinals.
Manteca’s Michailla Springs and Parm Toor took out Alyanna Palad and Elyse Wong of Patterson and Healy and Holly Healy and Madi McJague before running into the eventual champs from Mountain House.
The Molina-Mendez pair from East Union opened with an 8-0 win over Sierra’s Niya Pini and Amara Kenechukwu before meeting Ngo and Raman.
In singles competition, Oakdale’s Riley Avila defeated Mountain House’s Ishita Ahellya 6-4, 6-0 in the final. The singles tournament started Tuesday, and Ngo advanced to the semifinal before bowing out to focus on doubles play. Raman gave Avila a tough match in the quarterfinals but lost, 4-6, 5-7.
The SJS Individual Tournament takes place Nov. 7-8 at Johnson Ranch Racquet Club in Roseville. The top three singles players and top three doubles pairs out of the VOL qualify.
Manteca, which finished as VOL runner-up, begins the SJS team playoffs next Monday, Nov. 4.
