Dillon Lauborough’s varsity baseball debut won’t officially come until next spring season.
He showed on Wednesday that he is ready.
The incoming junior helped Manteca High’s club open the Lee Hampson Tournament with two victories in Modesto. The Buffaloes first beat Ripon 11-9 with winning pitcher Lauborough throwing the last four innings.
In the afternoon, Lauborough crushed a grand slam in the fourth inning as Manteca broke it open en route to an 11-2 win over Johansen.
Nate Chivello, a senior next year, went 2 for 3 with a key three-run double in the Ripon game before tossing seven strong innings for the win in Game 2. Chivello threw just 67 pitches.
Manteca head coach Gene Ballardo said he hopes to enter at least one more summer tournament to give him a longer look at what is to come.
“It’s important for the younger players coming in to see that varsity pitching, and it also gives us a chance to mix them in with the returners and get a feel for how we coach,” Ballardo said. “We have 18-19 guys on the team right now, which is a good number. It’s very exciting to see it and we’re looking forward to see them play in the future.”
Manteca continues pool play with a game against St. Mary’s today starting 12:15 p.m. before facing tournament co-host Downey Friday at 3. The pool winners move onto the semifinal round. Semifinal and championship contests will take place Sunday.
