The Lancers’ returning senior quarterback was harsh in his self-review Friday when he spearheaded a 41-26 victory at Ripon, grading his effort a ‘C.’
“I feel like I missed a lot of stuff,” he said, even after playing a part in all six of his team’s touchdowns.
Surely, he and the rest of East Union’s new-look spread offense struggled for much of the first half, and the host Indians’ swarming defense had something to do with that. Weaver was harassed in the pocket often and was off target on a few throws to open receivers. He also flashed his home run ability as a dual-threat signal caller.
On EU’s opening drive, Weaver was sacked three times but later came through with a 47-yard touchdown scamper on fourth and 10. In the second quarter, he hit an open Nickolas Luna in stride up the middle for a 31-yard touchdown that gave the Lancers a 14-13 lead they carried into halftime.
East Union didn’t trail for the entire second half as Weaver and Co. got rolling. All told, he scampered for 88 yards and four touchdowns on 17 carries while completing 15 of 23 passes for 279 yards and two scores.
“Luke Weaver, I think that name just speaks for itself,” Kuhnlenz said. “Super proud of him.”
