ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Janessa Ward, Lathrop track & field
AOW Janessa Ward
Janessa Ward

The Spartans junior earned four gold medals last Thursday in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV meet at Weston Ranch High School, winning the 100 meters (12.45 seconds), 200 (26.30) and was on the winning 4x100 relay team with Melia Lewis, Tatiana Lowery and Alaba Olaleye (49.86) and the 4x400 relay team with Moira Ramones, Lowery and Lewis (4:11.97).

“I felt really confident in the 200,” Lowery said. “I PR’d in it by nearly a third of a second. I didn’t PR in the 100, but I still did good.

“We PR’d in the 4x100. Our goal from the beginning was to break 50 seconds and we did that. And in the 4x400 we almost broke our school record.”

This is Ward’s first year of track competition.

“She is a volleyball and soccer player,” Lathrop coach Krystle Davis said. “This is her first year ever running track. She just has natural talent.

“It is exciting. We will get her back next year.”

Ward will join her Division IV championship Spartans on Friday for the two-day SJS Masters Championships beginning Friday at Davis High School.
