ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Adonis Siga, Lathrop track & field
AOW Adonis Siga

No stranger to winning in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV meet, Siga was happy to celebrate with his teammates last week at Riverbank High.

The hurdling standout was key in the Spartans claiming their first boys track and field SJS championship after they had disappointing runner-up finishes the past two years.

“That felt pretty great,” Siga said. “As soon as I found out we won, I couldn’t stop shouting in excitement and couldn't contain myself. It made my day, and my weekend, too.”

Lathrop needed all of Siga’s efforts to get it done, finishing with 70 points in the team standings ahead of Liberty Ranch’s 66 and El Dorado’s 64.

It was the same ol’ same ol’ from Siga at the divisional meet.

He three-peated as the SJS Division IV champion in both the 110-meter hurdles and 300 hurdles, dusting the field in 14.52 and 38.82 seconds, respectively, in the final heat on Friday, May 10. The times were not far off from his personal records — 14.48 in the 110, 38.12 in the 300 — established in the Sacramento Meet of Champions on April 20.

Siga did set a new personal record in the 100-meter dash, placing third in 11.04 seconds. It is likely the last time he runs the event in high school, as he focuses more on the hurdles this week at the SJS Masters Championships.

Siga was also part of the second-place 4x100 relay with fellow seniors Makoi Cagler, Jimari Dove and Charles Wright. They clocked a season best 43.35.

The Masters is a state-qualifying meet that takes place this Friday and Saturday at Davis Sr. Siga is looking to return to the state championships after making it last year in the 300 hurdles.
