The Lathrop High Spartans wrapped up their finest regular season in school history Friday with a 56-6 win over Beyer at Bennie Gatto Field.
The Western Athletic Conference champs posted a 7-0 mark in league play, 9-1 overall, and will now await the postseason. They’re hoping for a first-round bye in the upcoming Sac-Joaquin Section Division V playoffs.
"It would give us that extra week to get some of our injured players back," said Spartans coach Ryan Teicheira.
Against Beyer, Lathrop was methodical on offense, scoring on six straight possessions in the first half while surging out to a 42-6 lead.
Pablo Pena found the end zone three times, and quarterback Jordan Blase threw for a pair of touchdowns, including a 15-yard strike to Pena near the end of first quarter.
Earlier, he hit Alejandro Rivera on a 27-yard score. Blase completed three of his five passes for 53 yards and an interception.
The Spartans defense wreaked havoc, posting four sacks during that span. Sean Teu, Michael Adams, Casyn Hopping, and Javier Guevara, to name a few, applied the pressure.
"Our defense did a lot, especially our front seven," Teicheira added.
The Patriots (1-6, 2-8) had their moments, with quarterback Nolan Foehringer connecting with Lee Brown on a 64-yard touchdown shortly after Lathrop opened the scoring on Andre Muqhar's 1-yard plunge.
After holding on to a 7-6 lead, Lathrop poured it on from there, scoring a whopping 49 straight points.
Teu added the finishing touches, breaking loose for a 28-yard TD run.
In the second half — and with a running clock — the Spartans further employed their depth at running back.
Guevara, a defensive tackle, got into the act, scoring from a yard out in the third quarter.
Eddie Nelson found paydirt in the fourth with John Ocsona, who usually plays guard, converting on the two-point conversion run.
Fourteen players got a chance to run the ball on this day, with Lathrop amassing 268 yards on the ground.
Defensive coordinator Justin Muschott, meanwhile, praised Teicheira for the success of LHS football.
"He'll always credit the players," he said. "But it's him and his wife, Jenn, who put in all the work — they mean so much to the program."
