Ripon Christian used a balanced attack, and the defense forced three turnovers Friday in a 49-0 pasting of mauling of visiting Mariposa.
It’s the seventh-straight win for the Southern Athletic League leader, five of which ended in shutouts.
Sophomore quarterback Mason Tameling set season-highs across the board with 11 pass completions on 14 attempts for 149 yards and four touchdowns against zero interceptions. He found tight end Dustin Hoekstra for 23- and 25-yard TD tosses in the second quarter, giving the Knights (5-0 SAL, 7-1 overall) a 35-0 halftime lead. It’s the second game of the season for Hoekstra, a defensive standout in seasons past who was recovering from offseason elbow surgery during the first half of RC’s schedule.
Josh Miller, filling in for injured flyback Brady Grondz, led the Knights with 107 total yards from scrimmage on seven carries and four receptions. He opened scoring with a 6-yard catch with 7:55 left in the first quarter and found the end zone again early in the second quarter with a 15-yard run.
Tameling connected with tight end Jace Beidleman for the last of his touchdown throws early in the second half.
Ripon Christian ground out 289 rushing yards. Grant Sonke churned out 104 yards and a touchdown on eight carries. Trevor Van Elderen added 12 rushes for 67 yards and a TD of his own.
Linebacker Preston Zuidervaart recorded six tackles and two tackles for losses to lead the defense. Sonke and Miller contributed five tackles apiece. Ethan Schenk and Elias Ochoa each had an interception, and Van Elderen recovered the loose ball on a kickoff for another turnover.
