ROUNDUP: JV Buffs hold on for win at rival East Union

Midway through the fourth period Friday night, Manteca’s Luke Avila scampered 11 yards to give the Buffaloes some breathing room in a 15-6 Valley Oak League junior varsity contest at Dino Cunial Stadium.

Roman Duvernay (20 carries, 73 yards) gave Manteca (3-1 VOL, 5-1-1 overall) a 7-0 lead in the first period on a 3-yard run. Avila finished with 56 yards on 11 carries. JuJu Ramirez and Jeremiah Orona both contributed on offense.

Avila paced the Buffaloes with five stops. Dean Sortonis forced a fumble and added four tackles with three apiece for Ramirez (interception), Richie Robledo (fumble recovery), Orona (interception) and Julian Ramirez.

Ricky Soria (4-of-15 passing, 47 yards, two interceptions; 11 carries, 131 yards) got the Lancers (2-3, 4-4) on the board with an 80-yard touchdown scamper in the third quarter. Nikko Hisatomi added 47 yards on four receptions.

Jesse Martinez led the East Union defense with 13 tackles. Maddox Morales added seven stops, Shane Saenz five, Erick Cortez four and Hisatomi an interception.

Manteca travels to Patterson on Friday, and the Lancers travel to Sonora for a non-league contest.


Sierra 13, Patterson 10

Jimmy Burns nailed a 21-yard field goal as time expired to complete the fourth-quarter comeback for Sierra (1-3, 4-3). 

The Timberwoles trailed 10-3 to start the fourth quarter. Quarterback Daryl Carpenter scrambled and scored their lone touchdown with 6:54 remaining. Burns, who earlier made a field goal to help give his team a 3-2 halftime lead, converted the point-after kick to tie it. Carpenter hit Burns on a key fourth-down conversion on the drive. 

Sierra got the ball back thanks to Issac Kempf grabbing his second interception of the game. Carpenter came up with another big fourth-down pass on the winning drive, this time to C.J. Simas.

The Timberwolves travel to Oakdale on Friday at 5 p.m.


Ripon Christian 6, Escalon 0

Noah DeBruyn’s touchdown on a 69-yard fumble recovery in the first quarter held up to give the Knights (2-2 Trans-Valley League, 6-2 overall) the win.

Jax Booth paced the Ripon defense with 10 tackles. Josiah Van Vliet added five tackles with three apiece for Matt Trejos and Jeremy Molloy. Mason Clark and Stadler Postma each posted an interception.

Van Vliet was 5-of-11 passing for 58 yards. Booth (six carries, 33 yards), Talen Tameling (nine carries, 32 yards) and De Bruyn (nine carries, 28 yards) rounded out the offensive attack.

The Cougars drop to 1-3, 3-5.

The Indians travel to Orestimba on Friday at 5 p.m.


Ripon 28, Sonora 7

Andrew Shaw and Jude Viss connected for two touchdowns for the host Indians (4-0, 8-0) at Stouffer Field.

Shaw (13 of 17 passing, 150 yards; six carries, 27 yards) added a rushing touchdown with Viss pulling in four receptions for 58 yards. Ace Dougherty (14 carries, 120 yards) scored a rushing touchdowns and Matthew Gaines added 40 yards on four carries.

Ripon’s Ben Vita snagged an interception.

The Wildcats (3-2, 6-2) did not score until the fourth quarter.

The Indians host Escalon on Friday at 5:30 p.m.


Livingston 27, Lathrop 16

The host Wolves (5-0 Western Athletic Conference, 6-2) scored all of their points in the first half.

Darylon Reyno (seven carries, 53 yards) got the Spartans (1-3-1, 1-6-1) on the board in the third quarter with an 11-yard run, and in the fourth period, Reyno hit Ekam Sohal with a 22-yard scoring pass.

Lathrop’s Jayden White added 49 yards on eight carries, and Keoni Green chipped in 31 yards on four carries. White made four tackles and Sohal two.

The Spartans travel to Central Valley on Friday at 5 p.m.


Freshman

Manteca 37, East Union 0

Brody Carabello scored three touchdowns for the Buffaloes (3-1, 6-2) in the first period Thursday and another in the second.

Carabello (4-for-9passing, 90 yards; nine carries, 193 yards) scored on runs of 9, 11, 20 and 57 yards. Brixton Menchaca-Ortiz (13 carries, 83 yards) added a 5-yard touchdown run. Josiah Moreno added 70 yards on three receptions and Damien Short contributed to the offense.

Menchaca-Ortiz made seven tackles, Naythan Robledo (forced fumble) six, Brandon Maravilla –five with four apiece for Bode Hiatt, Alex Espinoza and short. Zack Shelton forced a fumble.

The Buffaloes host Patterson on Thursday at 6 p.m. Following a bye, the Lancers (2-3, 4-4) close out the year hosting Mountain House on Thursday, Oct. 31 at 6 p.m.


Sierra 16, Patterson 8

Jaysen Martinez directed the offense for the visiting Timberwolves (3-2, 4-3), scoring a rushing touchdown.

Martinez was 7 of 11 passing for 100 yards and gained 65 yards on 11 carries. Eli Phiefer added 70 yards on six carries and scored a rushing touchdown.

Dominic Balugo and Ven Piedad paced the Sierra with six tackles apiece. Isaiah Thompson and Aiden Sandoval added four stops apiece with three apiece for John Marek and Steven Graham.

The Tigers drop to 1-7, 0-5.

The Timberwolves host Oakdale on Thursday at 6 p.m.


Livingston 21, Lathrop 6

The host Spartans (4-1, 5-3) suffered their first WAC loss against the Wolves (4-1, 4-3).

Lathrop did not get on the board until the fourth period when Noe Gonzalez (three carries, 58 yards) scored on a 50-yard run. Jaylen Santos added 60 yards on nine carries with Randal Wright and Dario Joseph contributing on offense.  

The Spartans host Central Valley on Thursday at 6 p.m.
