LOWER LEVELS: JV Lancers surge past Sierra

 Sierra took an early lead Friday night, only for quarterback Ajay Carlson to lead visiting East Union to a 22-6 in Valley Oak League junior varsity football action at Daniel Teicheira Memorial Stadium.

Carlson (5 of 9 passing, 91 yards) connected on touchdown throws of 25 yards to Nikko Hisatomi (three receptions, 42 yards) and 37 yards to Jesse Martinez.

Erick Cortez (three carries, 59 yards) scored on a 29-yard run, and Maddox Morales ground out 101 yards on eight carries.

Cortez and Damian Delgadillo paced defense for East Union (1-0 VOL, 3-1 overall). Morales added six tackles, Martinez five and Ricky Soria made an interception.


Ripon Christian 34, Hilmar 20

The Knights (0-1, 3-1) led 14-13 at halftime of the Trans-Valley League opener.

Talen Tameling (six carries, 40 yards; two receptions, 33 yards) scored on an 8-yard run and a pass from Josiah Van Vliet (7 of 11 passing, 72 yards) on the last play of the game.

Van Vliet added a 22-yard touchdown pass to Noah DeBruyn (nine carries, 36 yards; two receptions, 28 yards).

Van Vliet made 14 tackles and an interception. Jack DeJong added 10 stops with six apiece for DeBruyn and Jeremy Molloy.

The Yellowjackets improve to 1-0, 4-0.


Manteca 7, Lincoln 7

The Trojans scored in the fourth period but elected to go for the tie instead in non-league action.

Luke Avila (six carries, 44 yards) scored for the Buffaloes (3-0-1) on an an 11-yard run in the first period. Jeremiah Orona posted seven carries for 57 yards and Roman Duvernay added 42 yards on 15 carries.

Avila led the defense with 10 tackles, Valentino Torres and Misale Rodrigues added four stops apiece and Joey Aucella made three tackles.


Freshman

East Union 40, Sierra 0

Max Abrew ran for two touchdowns and threw for one in the Lancers’ VOL shutout of the Timberwolves.

Abrew (8 of 17 passing, 110 yards) scored on 1- and 8-yard runs and threw an 18-yard scoring pass to Jackson Frith (three receptions for 42 yards). Workhorse Adrian Sena (20 carries, 97 yards) added touchdown runs of 2 and 6 yards, while Urijah Lopez returned a fumble 55 yards for a touchdown.

Nathan Bettencourt led the defense for East Union (1-0, 3-1) with seven tackles and a fumble recovery. Frith, Jacob Ramirez, and Darren Ellis chipped in five stops apiece.

The Timberwolves drop to 0-1, 2-2.


Lathrop 14, Pacheco 0

The Spartans scored all of their points in the first period of the Western Athletic Conference opener.

Jaylen Santos (16 carries for 128 yards) scored on a 23-yard for Lathrop (1-0, 2-2), and Didier Lofaro (eight carries, 65 yards) added a 43-yard touchdown run.

Alex Smith led the Spartans defense with seven tackles, Jacob Aguilar and Joshua Talalele added six stops apiece with Santos and Sael Sanchez each recovering a fumble.

The Panthers drop to 0-1, 0-4.


Manteca 27, Lincoln 0

Brody Carabello scored three touchdowns for the Buffaloes (3-1). 

Carabello (10 carries, 237 yards) scored on runs of 3, 60 and 70 yards. Brixton Menchaca-Ortiz (nine carries, 40 yards) added a 3-yard touchdown run.

Carabello was 3 of 6 passing for 28 yards with Joseph Moreno making two receptions for 20 yards.

Menchaca-Ortiz made eight stops with a fumble recovery. Camden Rodgers added six stops, Josiah Moreno (interception) with five and four apiece for Bode Hiatt and Ka’Ron Grisham.
