In a battle of unbeatens, Manteca’s freshman football team came from behind to take its lone lead late in the fourth quarter, and then held off host East Union’s drive as time expired in a 21-20 Valley Oak League victory at Dino Cunial Field.
Jhadis Luckey (10 carries, 54 yards) started and ended the scoring for Manteca, getting the first Buffaloes touchdown on a 77-yard punt return. In the closing minutes of the game Luckey got to the edge for a 15-yard touchdown to come within 21-20 and then ran the same play to put Manteca ahead 22-21.
Quinn Martinez was the workhorse for the Buffaloes, racking up 209 yards on 22 carries with a 97-yard touchdown run. Owen Gully was 6 of 10 passing for 41 yards.
Logan Pool led the Manteca defense with nine tackles. Maava Tialavea (forced fumble) added six stops, Micah Cardoza (pooch kick recovery) five and Martinez (interception) four.
The Lancers took a 20-13 lead into the fourth quarter behind a 4-yard first-quarter touchdown run by Chris Gallego, an 81-yard touchdown pass from Kirk Simoni (16 of 30 passing for 391 yards) to Jackson Fay (three catches, 122 yards) in the second period and a 44-yard touchdown pass from Simoni to J.P. Abrew (six catches, 101 yards) in the third quarter. Brayden Camara pulled in two receptions for 100 yards and Jeremy A'pe picked up 85 yards on 13 carries.
Gallego led the East Union defense with 11 tackles. Eddy Ramirez and Caydan Soliz added nine tackles apiece and Brayden Camara (forced fumble, fumble recovery) tallied eight stops.
Kimball 14, Sierra 6
Ryan Reyes booted a pair of 28-yard field goals for the Timberwolves.
Reyes was of 6 of 11 passing for 69 yards and picked up 49 yards on 17 carries. Jacob Paris, A.J. Chapman, Lorenzo Jones, Luis Gonzalez and John Thomson all contributed on offense for Sierra.
Reyes recovered a fumble and made an interception and Julian Ruiz had a fumble recovery.
Lathrop 20, Escalon 7
Pablo Pena gained 100 yards for the Spartans.
Pena needed 13 carries for those 100 yards and he scored a touchdown. Malikai Gonzales (eight carries, 40 yards) added a touchdown and Treydon Santos was 4 for 4 passing for 50 yards with 65 yards on seven carries.
Pena scored a touchdown on an interception and along with Eric Lucatero (two pass defections) led the Lathrop defense with five tackles each. Gabriel Fernandez (pass deflection, fumble recovery) and Arlee Wesley added three stops each.
