Former East Union multi-sport star Taylor Snaer played a big part in Modesto Junior College’s dominant run to the Big 8 Conference championship last week at Sacramento City College.
She was awarded Big 8 Female Athlete of the Year honors after four first-place finishes, including two record-setting performances, in the finals on Thursday. The Pirates accumulated 264 points, dusting second-place Santa Rosa (135).
MJC is also men’s champion, outpointing Delta College, 204-146.
Coach Demitrius Snaer is Big 8 Men’s and Women’s Coach of the Year.
Taylor Snaer torched the competition in the 100- and 200-meter dashes in 11.37 and 23.13 seconds, respectively — both new meet records. She was joined by Manteca alumna Alyson Schneider on the winning 4x100 (47.63) and helped the 4x400 relay team take first in 4 minutes, 7.48 seconds.
Snaer has clocked the state’s top times of the California Community College Athletic Association season in the100 (11.30), 200 (23.08) and 400 (54.56).
Schneider and fellow Manteca grad Camrenne Genilla were other top points producers for MJC’s women’s team.
Genilla did her damage in field events, winning the javelin with a throw covering 36.85 meters. She was also third in the triple jump, fourth in the long jump and fourth in the high jump. Schneider placed first in the long jump (5.51).
Other Big 8 individual champions for the MJC women: Kyndell Johnston (100 hurdles, 400 hurdles, 4x100, 4x400), Adamari Ron (1,500; 5,000), Jocelyn Pedretti (discus), McKenna Alderman (triple jump), Josalynn Ragland (4x100) and Camila Stephens (4x400).
Riverbank alumnus Adan Salgado keyed the MJC men’s title campaign. The Big 8 Male Athlete of the Year won the 10- and 5-kilometer runs and was the 1,500-meter runner-up. He broke a 22-year-old meet record in the 10k with a time of 31:21.81.
Joey Stout produced wins in the 200, 400 and long jump for the Pirates.
East Union alumnus Johnny Sandoval was among the top athletes for Delta. He won the 1,500 in 4:10.94, was second in the 5k and 10k and fifth in the 800.
Up next is the 3C2A NorCal Prelims and Finals this Friday and Saturday at American River College. The State Championships take place May 17-18 at Saddleback College.
