Former Lathrop High girls basketball standout Mary Cotton has wrapped up an impactful first season with the San Joaquin Delta College, earning a spot on the all-state third team.
The Mustangs’ season ended Saturday in the California Community Colleges Athletic Association NorCal regional final, falling to Big 8 Conference rival Sierra College, 47-44. Seeded 13th for the NorCal playoffs, the Wolverines have advanced to the state tournament and will take on the top team out of SoCal, Orange Coast, this Friday.
Delta enjoyed another successful season despite not returning any starters from its state runner-up squad from 2021-22, finishing 23-7 overall while placing second in the Big 8 with a 14-2 record.
The 6-foot-1 Cotton had a late start because of injuries but was a consistent all-around contributor. She averaged 13.3 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.6 steals and 1.9 blocks in 28.5 minutes per game.
In Delta’s 55-36 blowout win over Skyline in the NorCal semifinals, Cotton racked up 14 points, 17 rebounds, three assists and three blocks.
Cotton is a two-time Manteca Bulletin All-Area MVP who led Lathrop to co-championships in the Valley Oak League and Western Athletic Conference during her junior and senior years. In 2017-18, the Spartans reached the Sac-Joaquin Section championship round for the first time in program history.
