The Modesto Junior College women’s soccer team kicked off the new season Saturday with a 5-2 win over visiting Evergreen Valley College of San Jose.

Alumni from local high schools left their mark in the match.

Sierra graduate Lindsey Rose tallied the first two goals of the game, one assisted by East Union alumna Chloe Silva. Early in the second half, Annika Rose, Lindsey’s sister, gave the Pirates a commanding 3-0 with a long-distance shot after earning possession off a punt from the Evergreen goalie.

The Manteca High trio of sisters Corrine and Sienna Jones and Tatiana Orozco started on the defense, holding off a second-half charge from the Hawks who were able to close in, 3-2.

“We have a strong team this year, largely in part to the Manteca influx of players,” MJC coach Steve Aristoelous said. “They are going to play a lot this year and be massive contributors. Their development through the club system has them well prepared for the level.”

Marissa Renteria (Ceres) contributed one goal and two assists. Logann Meyer (Hughson) scored one.

Luke Weaver is having a rough time adjusting to life in paradise. “I still think to myself how surreal it is walking outside to go to school in Hawaii,” the 2022 East Union High graduate said. “It’s pretty bizarre, but I’m appreciative with the opportunity they’ve given me. This is something I’ve been working toward since I was 8 years old. I’m just soaking it in.” After two-plus standout seasons with the Modesto Junior College football team, Weaver is settling in during his second week at the University of Hawai’i.
