Heading into a week with matches against Weston Ranch and Ceres, Manteca High had to have a sweep. And that’s exactly what it got after a 4-1 win over Ceres Thursday afternoon at Guss Schmiedt Field.
Rileigh Mankin was outstanding in the win, scoring a natural hat trick with goals in the 31st, 68th and 78th minutes, and just missed on two more opportunities in scoring position.
Mankin scored on a breakaway in the first half, and was set up on a beautiful cross from Renee Munson midway through the second.
Taylor Trout scored Manteca’s first goal in the 24th minute.
“We played better than Tuesday, that’s for sure,” Mankin said. “We were passing the ball around a lot better, everyone picked it up.”
Manteca head coach Justin Coenenberg had high praise for his fill-in striker, especially after Mankin produced three scores with normal front-line burner Airenne Curry still sidelined.
“Rileigh’s hard on herself, and she probably feels like she missed a couple of gimmes,” Coenenberg said. “But in the last 15 minutes, you could tell she was going to score.”
Said Mankin: “It’s never good enough, you always want to do the best you can. I definitely should have finished that one-on-one.”
Manteca outshot Ceres 27-5, and keeper Jimi Gubor had five saves.
“We wanted to come out and make sure we won both games this week,” Coenenberg said. “Obviously, I would have liked to have seen a little bit more scoring-wise, but we still accomplished our goal.”
Curry watched the contest from the sideline, but feels her ankle is rounding back into game shape.
Briane Hatfield missed with an injured knee, as well.
“The ankle is still bothering Airenne quite a bit, she wants to go Monday, but we’ll see how it goes,” Coenenberg said. “When she’s in our lineup, she gives us that speed up top.”
Manteca (2-2 VOL, 8-4) mixes it up at Central Valley next, with a home match against Oakdale to follow.
“Oakdale’s playing pretty well,” Coenenberg said. “There are quite a few teams in the (Valley Oak League) that are all going to be right there.
“It’s going to be quite a battle.”
With just one substitute on the bench and stopper Julia Olaya out sick, the Cougars had a tough time keeping up with Oakdale.
“They scored five goals on mistakes by us,” Weston Ranch head coach Carlos Gaspar said. “The other two were awesome, they earned those.”
It doesn’t get any easier for the Cougars as a trip to Sonora looms Tuesday.
“For the first time this season, I felt we gave up out there,” Gaspar said. “It’s time to step it up.”
In yet another textbook shutout, the Timberwolves remained undefeated behind a hat trick from Nicole Vanni and four-save clean sheet from Moriah Fallon.
Sydnee Koscielecki scored in the 18th minute, and Michaela Scott capped the blowout in the 73rd.
Vanni scored in the 16th and the 39th, and booted a penalty kick through in the 61st minute.
Mariela Pimentel, Stephanie Vanni and Lacey Vaughan all had assists.
Sierra (4-0, 15-0-1) travels to Oakdale Tuesday before hosting Sonora Thursday.
