Wm. Earl Whitaker, "Bill" passed away on November 20, 2024, after a short illness. He was 94.
He is survived by his two daughters, Karen Odell of Modesto, and Rondi (Gregg) Bussey of El Dorado Hills. He is also survived by his grandson; Aaron (Amy) Coe of Bend, OR.
Bill was born in Southport, Indiana on March 28,1930. One of five brothers and a sister, they enjoyed many happy times in their country life. Bill worked on the farm, and after school at grocery stores, restaurants and construction. After high school, he joined the Air Force and became a tactical instructor and training coordinator for the USAF drill team. While there he married his high school sweetheart, Wanda Lancaster. Their two daughters were born there in San Antonio, TX. Moving home to Indiana, he started as a bread route salesman, eventually moving up to general manager of West Baking Co. of Indianapolis. While there, he attended The American Institute of Baking in Chicago. Upon completion of his coursework, he accepted the position of vice president of production at a family owned bakery, and moved the family to Sylvania, Ohio. In 1968, he was offered the position of plant manager at Sunbeam bakery in Stockton, and the family moved to Manteca, CA. After the Sunbeam plant closed, he worked in sales for Progressive Circuits, B.M.H. equipment, and Ted's Meats. Bill's main focus had always been to support his wife and daughters. His spirit was strong, and he muscled through difficulties with vigor and determination.
Bill painted and refurbished every house he lived in. He was a "jack of all trades" when it came to repairs and cosmetic improvements of all his homes. Married 70 years, he and Wanda enjoyed golfing, singing, dancing, and playing games with their daughters and grandson. The couple were very supportive of their families activities as well. In his later years, Bill enjoyed playing pool at the El Rancho clubhouse with his good buddies. He was a good friend, always willing to lend a hand. Bill will be missed by many friends and family. As one of his nieces said "He was one of the good ones!".
