Nelda Hilligoss Whiteside obit

Nelda Hilligoss Whiteside, born July 6, 1939, in Anderson, Indiana, passed away unexpectedly on December 7, 2024, at the age of 85.

Nelda is survived by her loving husband; William Whiteside "Bill", her daughters, Sherry (Mike) Hatfield of Escalon, Karen Howell of Sacramento; granddaughters Mikala (Jason) Giannini, Shelise (Ian) Yrigollen, Allison Howell, Shaelyn Hatfield, Nicole (Graham) Honig, and seven great-grandchildren.

As Nelda was born in Indiana, she and her family moved to Southern California when she was a child, and on to Turlock when she was a teen. She graduated from Turlock High in 1957. She continued her education and earned her Bachelor's Degree at Fresno State. She also earned her Master's Degree through the University of La Verne. Nelda married her love, Bill, 64 years ago, on June 24, 1960. They built a wonderful family and life together starting out in Fresno, making their way to Lemoore, Ca and finally settling in Manteca, Ca.

Her education allowed her the opportunity to be a teacher, but it was her compassion for others that made her a special one. She taught for 5 years in Fresno and 20 years at Golden West in Manteca. "Mrs. Whiteside" was kind, caring, and nurturing as she guided children in learning how to read, write, and solve math problems. Another characteristic that made her a great teacher was her attention to detail. She always liked to be very precise and organized. She got that trait from her father, Bob Hilligoss.

Nelda enjoyed many things. She loved cooking, gardening, her dogs and raising small farm animals. One of her favorite things was reading and coloring with her grandchildren. Nelda and Bill enjoyed spending time with lifelong friends and traveling. She especially loved time at the Tahoe cabin.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested any donations be made to the charity that is near to your heart. A formal service will not be held. The family requests that you privately celebrate Nelda’s memory in your own way.
