Leona Roos Van Groningen passed away on June 29, 2022 at the age of 92. She was born in Edgerton, Minnesota on December 13, 1929; the fourth of 12 children, to Tom and Dora Roos. At the age of 14, the family moved to Ripon, California where she lived for the rest of her life. She married Henry Van Groningen in 1948 and lived on Jack Tone Road until retirement. Leona loved her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and was a member of the Zion United Reformed Church.
Leona enjoyed her involvement in Home Bible Studies, BSF and as a Pink Lady at Doctor’s Manteca Hospital. She volunteered as a teacher’s aide at Ripon Christian and loved listening and singing in the Messiah.
Leona adored watching her children, grandchildren and great grands sporting events and music concerts. She was an avid sports fan and played golf until age 85. Mount Hermon and Pinecrest were summer highlights for the family. Leona was always up for playing a game or cards. Over the years, she served many delicious cakes and cookies at coffee time for family and friends.
Leona leaves behind her children, Mark (Deb) Van Groningen, Dale (Patti) Van Groningen, Kent ( Arlys) Van Groningen, Cindy (Mark) Hoeksema, Jeff (Judy) Van Groningen and Chris (Laurie) Van Groningen, her grandchildren, Eric (Kelly) Van Groningen, Renee (Adam) Partridge, Andrea (Jon) Meek, Tommy Van Groningen, Matthew (Miranda) Van Groningen, Joshua Van Groningen, Michael (Alyson) Van Groningen, Philip (Kacie) Van Groningen, Jennifer (Dan) Gudmunson, Amy Hoeksema, Megan Hoeksema, Tim Hoeksema, Emily (Steven) Etherton, Molly Hoeksema, Kathryn Van Groningen, Ross (Courtney) Van Groningen, Adrianna Van Groningen, Madelyn Van Groningen, Lukas Van Groningen, Joel Van Groningen, Julia Van Groningen and Vincent Van Groningen, along with great grandchildren, Caden, Trey, Emmy, Evangeline, Annika, Jeremiah, Josiah, Jude, Ariana, Carter, Ethan, Leanna, Levi, Hunter, Trent, Chase, Zane, Lance, Quinn and Cynthia. Leona also leave behind her siblings, Rena Swier, Eldora Roos, John (Anita) Roos, Ted (Fran) Roos, Jeanne Smithpeter and Lori Livingston. Leona is preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Henry Van Groningen and five siblings.
Deegan Funeral Chapel is honored to serve the Van Groningen family. A graveside service is scheduled for Friday, July 15th, at 10:00 AM at Ripon Cemetery followed by a memorial service at 11:00 at Zion United Reformed Church. Donations in Leona’s memory may be made to Ripon Christian Foundation.
