Joseph Avelino DeCosta Fontes, 73, entered into rest on January 20, 2021 in Lodi, CA.  He was born on October 25, 1947 in Altares, Terceira Azores.
   He is preceded in death by his parents John Silveira Fontes and Filomena DeCosta Fontes.
   Mr. Fontes is survived by his loving family, wife of 41 years Marilyn Fontes, daughters, Rachonda Fontes Carpenter (Daryl) of Manteca Tamara Barker of Manteca grandchildren, Britney Hamilton, Brandon Barker, Vanisha Van Huffel, Daryl Joseph Carpenter and Ryan Carpenter, great-grandchildren, Everly and Cohen, brothers, Manuel Fontes of Anitoch and John Fontes of Hilmar, caretaker and friend Barry Harris, as well as, many other extended family members who loved him dearly.
   As a young boy, Joe moved to the United States from the Azores. He attended Ripon High School and graduated from Manteca High School. While at Ripon High, Joe ran cross-country and was a member of the track team and while at Manteca High School, Joe held the record for fastest time climbing the Peg Board. He was an extremely hard worker, while in high school he worked for Joe J. Machado Dairy and made is career as a concrete finisher, retiring from the Cement Mason Union after 30 years. Joe was a huge soccer and football fan and loved the Raiders. He was proud of his Portuguese heritage and enjoyed going to Festas. Joe’s life was an image of John 15:12 “Love one another, even as I loved you” his kindness never went unnoticed and his love for others was always steadfast. Joe will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving dad and a doting grandfather, wonderful great-grandfather, brother and friend. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
