To be loved by Tom was to be loved without limits or conditions, and no one knew his love deeper than the girl down the street, who caught his eye as a teenager. He was an avid golfer and a fierce member of the 49er Faithful. Tom was the biggest fan in the stands for his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, attending games and practices, performances and banquets.

Tom is survived by his wife Lucinda, Christopher Brandenburg, daughter Kristie Watts (Troy Watts), son James Brandenburg Jr. (Sara Brandenburg), son Shawn Brandenburg (Elaine Gacayan), seven grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Darlene Cole (Jerry Cole), sister Shirley Brandenburg, brother Mike Brandenburg (Kandy Brandenburg), sister Carol Seely, sister-in-law Valerie Brandenburg, and many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.
