James Montiel, a lifelong resident of Manteca, was a beacon of warmth, laughter, and joy in the lives of those around him. He passed away on August 8, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of selflessness and community service. Born on June 2, 1960, in Stockton, California to the late Cipriano “Jim” and Marilyn Montiel, James was a fixture in the community he loved so dearly.

   James is survived by his beloved wife, Debbie, and his three brothers, Chris, Richard, and Eric Montiel. While James did not have children of his own, he cherished the special bond he had with his numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews, whom he treated as if they were his own.

   After graduating from East Union High School in 1978, James dedicated 45 years of his life to his work at Safeway grocery store, where he held a management position. His dedication to his job was second only to his commitment to his family and community. A devout member of Saint Anthony’s Catholic Church, James and his wife Debbie were involved in numerous nonprofit organizations, particularly Hospice of San Joaquin and ARC Nonprofit, inspired by his uncle David's special needs.

   A man of simple pleasures, James found peace and serenity visiting the beach. He enjoyed shopping and traveling, but his greatest passion was his love for God and family. His wife, Debbie, held a special place in his heart and he loved her unconditionally.

   James will be remembered for his big personality infectious laugh his love for travel and all foods.. He was a generous, selfless man with a caregiver's heart, always ready to extend a helping hand to those in need.  His memory will be cherished, and his life will be celebrated by all those who knew and loved him.

   In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to ARC Nonprofit or Hospice of San Joaquin. These were organizations that held a special place in James’s heart.

   P.L. Fry and Son is honored to be serving the Montiel family. Visitation will be on Monday, August 14, 2023 at 

3:00 p.m. followed by a rosary/vigil at 6:00 p.m. both held at P.L. Fry and Son Funeral Home, 290 N. Union Rd., Manteca, Ca. A Mass will be on Tuesday, August 15, 2023 at 11:00  a.m. held at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, 505 E. North St., Manteca, Ca. He will be laid to rest at Park View Cemetery.
