Doris Lee Carlson, born on May 24, 1942, in Stockton, California, passed away on October 14, 2024, in Glendale, Arizona, from complications due to pneumonia. She was the beloved daughter of Stanley and Dora Mortensen.
Doris graduated from Manteca High School in 1960 and earned her degree in education from San Jose State College in 1964, where she was a proud member of the Alpha Omicron Pi sorority. Later that year, she married the love of her life, James, in a ceremony at the Presidio of Monterey.
For the next 31 years, Doris and James traveled extensively, living in various locations across the United States, Korea, and Germany, as they supported James’ distinguished career in the U.S. Army. Throughout their journey, Doris was a constant source of strength and kindness to her family and friends.
Doris is survived by her devoted husband of nearly sixty years, Colonel James R. Carlson (Ret.); her two sons, James R. Carlson II, and Jason Carlson, along with his wife, Emily. She also leaves behind five cherished grandchildren: Oliver, Linda, Oscar, Patrick, and Hannah and her husband, Ryan Burmeister, as well as their children, Noah and Ava. Doris is also survived by her sister, Karen Tartre.
Doris’s kind spirit and loving presence will be deeply missed by all who knew her. She was an incredible friend, wife, mother, and grandmother, and her warmth and generosity touched the lives of many. Doris leaves behind a community of family and friends who will forever cherish her memory.
In accordance with her wishes, a small private family ceremony will be held in November to honor her life. Following the ceremony, Doris’s remains will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery, where she will ultimately be laid to rest alongside her beloved husband, James.
