Robert Iniquez will take the next few months to reflect on his first foray into weight-loss competitions.

Iniquez is the owner and head trainer at Manteca’s CORE Performance, which staged its first Biggest Loser-style reveal over the weekend.

The celebration was the culmination of a 12-week contest that measured its contestants’ weight and body fat percentage loss, as well as inches trimmed.

The results were startling; the final tallies encouraging.

Participants lost a total of 373.6 pounds, more than 73 percent body fat and 354 inches.

“It did exactly what I had hoped it would do,” Iniquez said. “That is jumpstart people’s fitness journey and light a fire under others who had already begun.”

Three winners were crowned: Tina Borgeson, body fat percentage; Rob Both, total weight loss; and Chase McKee, total inches.

Borgeson lost 11 percent body fat, earning the competition’s grand prize – a 46-inch flat-screen LED TV.

She entered with an athletic base, Iniquez said, so the competition helped fine tune her diet and exercise plan.

“She was already pretty fit. It wasn’t until we started the competition that she started looking at her diet and workouts,” Iniquez said. “She already worked hard, but it was that extra incentive. She started looking at little things to cut out and take it further.”

Both lost 30 pounds and was rewarded with a bouquet of prizes: a couple’s photo shoot, a $100 gift card to TJ Maxx and two hairstyling certificates.

McKee won a Nike Fuel Band for shedding 17 inches off his hips, waist, arms and legs.

Iniquez was quick to remind all those in attendance on Saturday that the grand prizes shouldn’t define their individual success.

“I always tell them not to compare themselves to anyone else but themselves,” Iniquez said. “As long as they’re better now than when they started, they’re winning.

“Overall, I think people were happy with it. A lot of them pushed themselves to limits they didn’t think they could.”

Joshua Messersmith was voted Most Dedicated, a distinction that came with a gift basket from Mike’s Coffee, Raw Juicing, Yogurt and Spirits. Messersmith also won the raffle for one free month of CORE’s unlimited membership.

Jane Kullman, 77, was voted Most Inspirational, receiving a session with massage therapist Katherine Avila.

Those that attended Saturday’s reveal left with one free week of unlimited CORE bootcamps.

Iniquez is inspired by his maiden voyage into weight-loss competition.

He plans to host two a year, with the next scheduled for January.

“I’m going to use these next few months to look at what we could have done better as a staff, what I can do to help them even more, and what we can do to make the competition better,” he said.

“I learned a lot from this. I’m going to look back and try to make it even better.”
