SAN DIEGO (AP) — The second in command of a San Diego unit has been let go from his job because of alleged inappropriate emails and texts sent to female sailors under his command.
U-T San Diego reports Cmdr. Allen Maestas was removed from Naval Beach Group 1 on Thursday. The newspaper said the messages were apparently flirtatious in nature and didn't respect the senior-subordinate relationship.
Maestas is a former enlisted sailor who became an officer. His medals include the Bronze Star.
This move by the Navy comes amid controversy over sexual assault in the military.
Maestas has been temporarily reassigned to another unit. A permanent relief is expected to arrive in June.
