RIVERSIDE . (AP) — A man who allegedly led Southern California authorities on a gunfire-punctuated chase was charged Friday with attempting to murder three officers.
Riverside County prosecutors alleged that Leslie D. Berry Jr., 38, shot at a Corona police sergeant and two Riverside police officers on Oct. 11.
In addition to three counts of attempted murder, he was charged with felony evading and unlawful possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
The incident began when the Corona sergeant tried to pull over a van matching the description of a vehicle involved in a September drive-by shooting.
Prosecutors said the van sped away to Riverside where the driver fired shots at the sergeant, striking his car. Two Riverside officers witnessed that and returned fire and the van driver fired shots at all three officers before the pursuit ended with an arrest.
No one was hurt by the gunfire.
Berry was scheduled for arraignment Friday but no plea was entered. A public defender was appointed and a request for a continuation of the arraignment was granted. The new date is Oct. 25.
