MODESTO (AP) — Three murder suspects are facing additional charges after authorities say they stabbed a fellow inmate at a Central California jail.

The Modesto Bee reports that David Ferrel, Joseph Jauriqui and Maurilio Vasquez were charged Tuesday with attempted murder in the weekend stabbing of Joe Ramirez at the Stanislaus County Jail. Ramirez lost his eye in the attack.

Ramirez — an alleged Norteno street gang member — is facing murder charges in connection with a 2009 shooting that left a 10-year-old boy and a man dead.

Prosecutors say they don’t know why Ferrel, Jauriqui and Vasquez stabbed him with a shank on Sunday. Deputy District Attorney Tom Brennan says the three suspects are also Norteno gang members and are also facing separate murder charges.
