POLICE SAY COUPLE KILLED SUSPECTED PIMP
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A San Francisco couple faces murder charges for allegedly killing a man last week they suspected of pimping their teenage daughter.
Barry Gilton and his girlfriend Lupe Mercado appeared in court Wednesday on murder and other charges for the shooting death of 22-year-old Calvin Sneed. Both are being held on $2 million bail.
Police said once the couple found out their 17-year-old daughter might be a working prostitute for Sneed, they searched across the state for their child. Authorities believe the pair were responsible for a shooting last month where someone fired into Sneed's car in North Hollywood.
Sneed was shot and killed in San Francisco on June 4. Police believe Gilton was the shooter.
Officials strip Berkeley woman of day care license
BERKELEY (AP) — Authorities say a Berkeley woman has been stripped of her family home day care license after being sentenced for carrying a concealed weapon and alcohol-related reckless driving.
Tanya Comminey, 49, has run Bright Morning Star Day Care in Berkeley for over 20 years. She was arrested twice in two weeks by El Cerrito police in 2009 and pleaded no contest in 2010.
She was sentenced to 30 days in jail, two years of probation and fined $1,200.
Oakland police look for man who killed barber
OAKLAND (AP) — Police are looking for a killer and a motive in the death of a popular barber who was gunned down just a few feet from the Oakland shop where he worked.
Jason Chess, 30, of Antioch was killed Tuesday as he walked toward the Wrist Action Barber Shop in Oakland.
After he was shot, investigators say he staggered into the shop and collapsed. He died at a hospital an hour later.
2 killed, 1 wounded in SF parked car shooting
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — San Francisco police say a man and woman were shot and killed as they sat in a parked car.
The shooting in the city's Silver Terrace neighborhood on Wednesday night left a third person, identified only as a 27-year-old man, wounded. His injuries are considered non-life threatening.
Police identified the shooting victims as 39-year-old Allen Vance and 20-year-old Chastity Dollison, both of San Francisco. According to police, someone approached their car around 10:20 p.m. and opened fire.
Report: Oakland police response to protest flawed
OAKLAND (AP) — An independent report says that the Oakland Police's handling of a violent protest involving anti-Wall Street demonstrators was flawed due to inadequate staffing, poor planning and training.
A report by the Frazier Group released Thursday said that the department was ill equipped to handle the Oct. 25 protest just hours after police cleared an Occupy Oakland encampment in front of City Hall. Hundreds were arrested during the day's event that also left an Iraqi war veteran with a fractured skull after being struck by a police beanbag round.
The report also issued 68 recommendations for the department including revising its use of force and mutual aid policies.
